Saddest news just hit Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia stateyesterday as one of its final year students committed suicide by hanging himself in his dorm room.
A final year student of Michael Okapara University of Agriculture, Louis Chigoziririm Ihejirika Jackson, has committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room, according to report we got from a Facebook user with the name, Nwachukwu Stella, who happened to be a friend of the deceased, the incident happened yesterday at his hostel, Snow lodge, it was reported that he locked the door and closed all the windows before putting a rope around his neck and hung himself.
“THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF LOUIS IHEJIRIKA
With a heavy heart we the 400L students of B.agric (SIWES STUDENTS) announces the death of one of us by name Louis chigozirim Ihejirika who died mysteriously by hanging himself, at first we taught it was a joke but on getting to the scene ground I saw my man already dead, the whole doors and windows was locked but with the help of the 3 guys who went with me the almaco was forced open and behold Louis on a ceiling fan hook with white polo and his black jean trouser already dead. I know we can’t question God but I strongly believe he should have an answer and reason behind this death,as we embark on a prayer we believe God will reveal everything hidden in the eyes of man that propelled this handsome, brilliant and sound young man to take his own life by Hanging. Louis you have been my close friend and departmental mate but at this point I am heartbroken because there is nothing in this life that can make you take your own life without seeking my advice. But I pray God to give your family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. RIPLouis Jackson.”
When access was finally gained into his room, Chigozirim was found dangling from the ceiling fan, the state police are currently investigating the cause and circumstances surrounding the death of this young man.
Was it a coincidence that Nigerian celebrity author, Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie made a speech some days ago about how young Nigerian men’s death are on the rampant these days because of the way they are being brought up to bottle up their feelings and be a man. to be strong. She gave this speech on Wednesday at Hubsport’s 2018 inbound Conferencethat took place in Boston USA, Adichie revealed that men have a higher rate of dying by suicide as opposed to women.
She said: “Both men and women suffer from the illnesses that lead to suicide but it is men that have a much higher rate of dying by suicide.
“Why? Because men are socialized to suppress so many human parts of themselves, men are socialized not to ask for help, men are socialized to be afraid of fear, men are socialized not to show vulnerability.
“From the moment we tell a little boy that ‘boys don’t cry’ or we tell a hurting teenager to ‘man up’ we are creating an adult man who will be cheated of the full range of his emotions. So, while men benefit from patriarchy, they also suffer from it.”
This can not be further from the truth as we evaluate the death of young Chigozirim and why he didn’t talk to his closest friends about what was bothering him, why he decided this bottle up the feelings that were eating him up slowly till that monster drove him to kill himself.
We did a post here some months ago about how a young man was going to kill himself because his girlfriend left him without saying goodbye and the many challenges he was facing in his early thirties. This cases of young Nigerian men taking their lives after a relationship went wrong is prevalent in every society but the Nigerian situation is on the rise and psychology intervention need to be employed to curb this epidemic.
